Certification Requirements
Dear Students,I am happy to offer certification for Qigong Therapists and Qigong and Tai Chi Instructors through the Qi Gong Institute of Rochester. The requirements and responsibilities for certification are listed below. I am offering this as an option to those who are interested although any person may take classes at the Institute without committing to the whole program.
When choosing a school to become certified with, you should consider what the certification means for you and the quality of the information you will receive~
Why become certified?
With certification here at the Qi Gong Institute of Rochester you are creating a bond between you and the school. This bond links you to a continuity of knowledge that was passed down to me from my teachers. It is a reciprocal bond that connects you to the school and the school to you for mutual cultivation. This certification is not just a piece of paper. With your certification you will have a personal connection with me as the head of the school and have my support in passing on this knowledge to whomever you choose.
What is the quality of the knowledge?
Because I am a certified Qigong Master through my teacher, Dr. Jwing-Ming Yang, you know that the knowledge you will receive is of the highest quality. I have a strong bond with Dr. Yang and continue my studies with him year after year.

Certification Requirements for Instructors
- To become a certified instructor, you must take instruction from the Qi Gong Institute of Rochester for the material you wish to become certified to teach whether as a course or seminar or through private instruction. Teaching of Qi Healing is not allowed by any other instructors other than Lisa B. OShea unless you have received special training from Master Lisa.
- Practical Exam ($110): Demonstrate the form to the satisfaction of Lisa B. O’Shea. Internal aspects of the forms (see below) must be understood by the student. You may test for multiple Qigong/Tai Chi forms during one exam period as long as the exam duration is no more than 75 minutes at no additional charge ($100/exam period).
- Teaching Exam (no charge): Demonstrate teaching a portion of the form to a group of students (live/recorded/or by Skype).
- After passing the exam for each individual form you will receive a certificate listing you as certified to teach that particular form. After receiving certification in five different forms of Qigong exercise you will also receive a certificate listing you as "Certified Qigong Instructor" without the designation of the certification being for a particular single form.
- Instructors may become certified to teach the following forms: Rising Lotus Medical Qigong, Beginners Fragrance Qigong, Intermediate Fragrance Qigong, Six Healing Sounds Qigong, Four Seasons Qigong, Healthy Balance Qigong, Crane Flying Qigong, Eight Pieces of Brocade Qigong, Five Animals Qigong, Silk Reeling Qigong, Swimming Dragon Qigong, Tai Chi Short Form (24 Form), and Yang Style Tai Chi Long Form.
Note: The internal aspects (for both Tai Chi and Qigong) of the forms as mentioned above include breathing patterns and associated health benefits. Specifically for Tai Chi, you must demonstrate an understanding of coiling while playing through the forms.
Qigong Therapy Provisional and Permanent Certification:
Further classes may be added to the Qigong Therapy program as the Institute grows and expands. There is no time limit imposed on the certification process. The exams should be taken only when the student feels most ready. To receive Qigong Therapy certification, each student must successfully meet all the requirements at that time and pass the exams. Repeating a class or an exam may be necessary in some cases at my discretion. After passing the exams, the student will be provisionally certified as a Qigong Therapist for one year. For the next two years after receiving certification, each certified student will be required to take and pass the Qigong Therapy practical exam, once each year, to maintain provisional certification. After the third practical exam, the Qigong Therapy certification will be permanent. Only the Qigong Healing practical exam needs to be repeated, the written and oral exams are only taken once.
Note on Certified students responsibilities: All information, except the Qi Healers techniques (additional teacher training required for students to teach Qi Healers techniques), may be taught and Healing sessions may be provided by any student to others outside the Qi Gong Institute of Rochester without obligation as long as the origin of the material is clearly stated as coming from the Qi Gong Institute of Rochester and Lisa B. O'Shea. Lisa B. OShea commits to supporting the growth of her certified instructors' and therapists' business and practice through mentoring, referrals of clients or students when possible, and continued instruction. This policy formalizes the interdependent relationship between a Certified student and the school to which they have committed themselves, creating a strong bond of mutual support.
